Middle School Co-ed League

Elm City League Officials Guidelines

·         As an assistant referee (AR), you are an integral part of the officiating crew (the center, the other AR and yourself).  You must work together as a TEAM, communicating with each other primarily (NOT with spectators or coaches along the sidelines).  Focus on YOUR responsibilities, and try to communicate when necessary with the center referee primarily, because the center is actually the person in charge on the field.  The center ultimately makes the final decisions on the field.
·         Show respect to ALL individuals attending the match – players, coaches, parents, fans, not only to other officials.
·         As an official, your PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES are threefold:
(1)    Help to ensure the safety of players, as well as spectators (and anyone else attending the match)
(2)    Help to ensure that justice is served -that fair calls are made for both teams
In this regard, try your best – we all make mistakes.  If you make a mistake, learn from it but don’t dwell on it. Even if you hate a player or coach on one team, DO NOT PLAY FAVORITES!  HOLD NO GRUDGES! This will only create more tension on the field and result in potentially serious and dangerous situations!  ALWAYS TRY TO BE FAIR TO ALL!
(3)    Keep the match going – officials do not dwell on any one situation unless it’s a serious injury or disturbance – they make the call and move on – DO NOT debate recently made calls by the officiating team with spectators, coaches or players.  If someone tries to suck you into a heated discussion about a call simply ignore it.  You should be professional and courteous but DO NOT feel as though you owe anybody an explanation for a call – because you don’t!

·         BE ON TIME.  Show up at least 15 minutes prior to kick-off (8:45 AM at the latest).  Remember, part of your job as an AR is to help inspect the field and the goal nets prior to each match.  Make sure that the goal is properly secured (so it doesn’t tip over or fall apart), and that the netting doesn’t have any holes in it.  If so, try to tape them up (you’re center should carry a roll of tape to games for this purpose).  Help remove debris from the field to keep it safe and playable for players.  Also, the center should hold a brief pre-game talk about details like signals and how to communicate during the match (substitutions, fouls, disturbing behavior, etc.)
·         KNOW YOUR FLAG SIGNALS.  Please check out the instructional video on this subject as well as other key topics at www.newhavenref.blogspot.com for officiating the game of soccer.

·         Assignments for the upcoming weekend will appear under the Assignments tab of the www.NewHavenRef.blogspot.com web site.  If you have questions about an assignment or can’t honor one, call the referee assignor (that’s me) as soon as possible so I can find a replacement for you!  You can call or text me at 203-252-6219.  You should also send me an email at rwiegs@comcast.net

·         PLEASE REVIEW Law 11 – the OFFSIDE RULE by watching the instructional video on the www.NewHavenRef.blogspot.com  web site every Friday (on the day prior to each match).

·         WEAR PROPER ATTIRE.   This consists of the official jersey, black shorts and black socks.  You can and should wear black bergalene or under-armour lining when it gets cold.  You should invest in a digital watch that counts down the seconds for each half.  (Cell phones have them, but you must not answer phone calls during games and keep cell phones in a pocket so it doesn’t distract you or others).  Carry a small pad and a pen/pencil to record goals scored and any caution-able offenses).  You should wear a pair of cleats or turf shoes if possible.

·         I hope you have fun as an AR for the Elm City Soccer League.  I also encourage you to become a certified Connecticut State referee so you can officiate more games in the CJSA (and make more money too!).  To become certified, please visit www.ctreferee.net for further info.

·         THANK YOU FOR HELPING US OUT THIS SEASON!
